Roy
has been our town crier since 2001 and represents the town of Ilfracombe
throughout the UK and the world |
He enters many crier competitions and was the Devon champion in 2003 and 2004 also winning in Llandovery 2005, Hatherleigh 2003, 3rd in Guild Championships 2004, 6th in European Championships 2004 and 2nd in the National Championships 2004, also placed many times. He represented us in the AUSTRALIAN world championships in sept 2005 and also in 2003, coming well up the list in a world class competition. |
He has travelled to Gent in Belgium in September for yet another competition. As if this does not keep him busy enough he and Peter Robins organised the Annual Ilfracombe Town Criers competition. With 31 Criers performing. The winner of which was Paul Gouth from Nuneaton.In 2007 the competition will be on the 16th and 17th June, with 35 already entered a fantastic event for the town. |
Throughout 2006 he still wandered far and wide extoling the virtues of Ilfracombe, still trying to get people to take home at least one seagull!! 2006 saw him go to Fremington, Braunton, Minehead, Bromyard, Yeovil, Witherings, Gent (Belgium), Salcombe, South Molton, Chumleigh, Kingswood, Topsham, Banbury, Newton Abbot, Widecombe, Wooton Bassett, Liskeard, Callington, Exmouth, Tavistock,, Barnstaple, hatherleigh and Kingsbridge. At some of the competitions winning the odd trophy but most of the time finishing equal fourth like most of the rest. Roy will not be going to compete in the world championships this year as the organisers in South Africa do not seem to be able to get their act together. He feels his time and money can be spent better in the UK, parfticularly in Ilfracombe doing what a properly appointed and professional Town Crier Does God Save the Queen |
