Visiting Barnstaple will provide you & your family a genuine & special Devon experience. You will be hard pressed to find a more safe & friendly destination anywhere in the South West with such a fantastic mixture of shops & restaurants.
Our traditional market town has an extensive shopping mix that makes a great day out for visitors & residents alike, bringing life, business & pleasure to all who visit. Geographically, Barnstaple sits on the banks of the River Taw near the North Devon coastline.  The area enjoys a unique topography with an extensive sandy beach coastline and close proximity to Exmoor National Park.
Barnstaple has expanded from its market town origins, to become the area's Regional Centre.  Several national house builders are completing residential developments within the town and its suburbs.   Commercially the town contains many of the major national retailers and several edge of town developments have been completed.
The sustained wealth and growth of the area has been enhanced following the building of the A361 linking North Devon to the M5 at Tiverton.  The road network has been further enhanced by the construction of the new downstream bridge at an estimated cost of £40m.
It is the main town of the district and claims to be the oldest borough in the United Kingdom. It was founded at the lowest crossing point of the River Taw, about 3 miles (5 kilometres) from the Taw's seafall at the Bristol Channel. By the time of the Domesday Book, Barnstaple had its own mint. Its size and wealth in the Middle Ages was based on it being within the staple, a staple port licensed to export wool, and its importance is still obvious in the town's name. The wool trade was further aided by the town's excellent port, with five ships being sent in 1588 to aid the fight against the Spanish Armada.
